Today we take you straight into the heart of old Bangkok! Your guided walking tour begins at the Grand Palace, the most famous landmark in the city and, for 150 years, the home of the Thai king, the royal court, and the seat of government. Your guide will walk you through the Royal Pantheon, the Coronation Throne Hall, and the Royal Reception Hall.

Inside the same walls, you will visit Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, easily the most sacred temple in Thailand and one of the most dazzling buildings you will see anywhere on this trip. From there we take you on to Wat Pho, home of the enormous golden Reclining Buddha, before crossing the river to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, whose porcelain-studded spire looks completely different up close than it does from the water.

In the evening, we suggest heading up to a rooftop bar for your first proper look at the Bangkok skyline, then coming back down to earth with dinner in the lanes around Banglamphu, where the food is excellent and the prices are wonderfully local.

Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya grew into one of the most powerful and cosmopolitan cities in the world, with merchants arriving from Europe, Persia, China and Japan, and golden-roofed temples that rivalled anything in Asia.

With your English-speaking guide you will explore the most striking corners of the Ayutthaya Historical Park: towering brick prangs, rows of headless Buddha statues, and the famous sandstone Buddha head cradled in the roots of a banyan tree. Your guide brings the whole arc of the story to life, from the city's rise and golden age to its dramatic fall.

Back in Bangkok in the late afternoon, we suggest keeping the evening easy. A stroll through Lumphini Park as the city cools down, followed by dinner somewhere unhurried, is the perfect way to close a big day of history.

We have kept your daytime completely free today, because your included experience saves the best of Bangkok for after dark. Use the morning and afternoon however you like. If you are here on a weekend, we suggest Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the largest markets in the world. If you would rather stay central, the Jim Thompson House is a beautiful, shaded escape, and a canal longtail boat through Thonburi shows you a completely different side of the city. In the evening, your included Bangkok by Night tour begins, and it is a real highlight. For your first hours in the city, we suggest keeping it close and easy. Wander through Merdeka Square and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, then walk over to Masjid Jamek where the city's two rivers meet, a spot that is especially lovely in the late-afternoon light. From there, the covered lanes of Central Market are a good place to browse batik, pewter and local crafts without the heat.

In the evening, we recommend dinner at Jalan Alor, the street food strip that comes alive after sunset. Grilled satay, char kway teow, roti canai and a glass of teh tarik make a very good welcome to Malaysia.

Today is your big day in Kuala Lumpur, and we have arranged a private tour with your own driver and guide so you can cover a lot of ground without ever feeling rushed.

You will begin at Batu Caves, just north of the city, where a 272-step rainbow staircase climbs past a towering golden statue of Lord Murugan into an enormous limestone cavern with a Hindu temple inside it. It is one of the most photographed places in Malaysia and genuinely impressive in person. From there your guide takes you to Thean Hou Temple, a six-tiered Chinese temple with sweeping views over the city, and to the National Mosque, whose modern folded roof is unlike anything else you will see on this trip.

Through the afternoon you will take in the landmarks of the old colonial centre, including Merdeka Square, the beautiful old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and the Royal Palace, with plenty of stops for photos. Your guide will also walk you through Chinatown, Central Market and Little India, which is where the city's mix of cultures is easiest to see, smell and taste.

The finale is the Petronas Twin Towers, with admission to the Observation Deck and the Skybridge included. Standing between the two towers at that height, with the city spread out below you, is the moment most people remember from Kuala Lumpur.

In the evening, we suggest heading to KLCC Park below the towers for the fountain show, then finding a rooftop nearby for a drink with the towers lit up in front of you.

For your first afternoon, we suggest starting in one of the heritage districts. Kampong Glam, with the golden dome of the Sultan Mosque and the street art and independent shops of Haji Lane, is a favourite of ours. Chinatown and Little India are equally rewarding and just as easy to reach on the MRT, which is spotless, air-conditioned and the best way to get around the city.

As evening arrives, we recommend walking the Marina Bay waterfront promenade for your first proper look at the skyline, then having dinner at a hawker centre. Lau Pa Sat or Maxwell Food Centre are both excellent, and Hainanese chicken rice, chilli crab or laksa are all very good places to start.

If you want the icons, they will take you through Marina Bay, the Merlion, the colonial civic district and the Singapore River. If you would rather see the city locals actually live in, they will steer you towards neighbourhoods like Tiong Bahru, with its curved art deco housing blocks, independent bookshops and one of the best wet markets in the city.

Because your host is a local rather than a script-reader, this is also the best day of the trip to eat properly. Ask them to take you into a hawker centre and order for you. Kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs for breakfast, char kway teow or bak chor mee for lunch, and a sugarcane juice to survive the humidity.

In the evening, we suggest heading to the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay if you would like to see them properly, or simply taking the walk along the Helix Bridge as the skyline lights come on. It is a free view and still one of the best in the city.

Your last full day starts free, so you can spend it exactly as you like. We suggest crossing over to Sentosa Island, where you will find beaches, the Skyline Luge, S.E.A. Your last full day starts free, so you can spend it exactly as you like. We suggest crossing over to Sentosa Island, where you will find beaches, the Skyline Luge, S.E.A. Aquarium and Universal Studios Singapore all in one place, which makes it an easy win if you are travelling with kids. If you would rather stay on the main island, Singapore Zoo and the River Wonders are outstanding, and Orchard Road is where to go if the shopping is calling. In the evening, your included night tour begins, and it is the perfect way to say goodbye to the city. You will start at Merlion Park for the classic view across Marina Bay, then move on to Clarke Quay and its row of colourful heritage shophouses lit up along the water. From there you will board a Singapore River cruise, gliding past the waterfront landmarks and skyscrapers with your guide filling in the stories behind them.

Next comes Garden Rhapsody, the light and music show at the Supertree Grove in Gardens by the Bay, where the whole grove pulses in time with the music. The evening finishes at the Marina Bay Sands promenade with Spectra, the water and light show out over the bay, which is where most people take their favourite photo of the entire trip.
